With continued interest in the work of Howard Hodgkin, Jex looked into interviews in which Hodgkin discusses his paintings and the progress of aging. There is a degree of humour in Oh I Do Like, in which the audience joins in with Hodgkin whilst together they reflect and ponder on the decisions and life of an artists.
MFA Connect: Victoria University, Canada & Newcastle University, United Kingdom
University of Victoria – May 2008
Newcastle University – June 2018
What does it mean to make art within a university setting? MFA Connect arose out of this line of questioning, and the need for emerging artists to connect with both local and international art centres.
Access to these centre’s can be difficult for students, but is at the same time essential to their creative research and a part of the essence of contemporary art making. MFA Connect reworks the long-standing tradition of Mail Art through a digital correspondence, bringing together the University of Victoria, Canada and Newcastle University, United Kingdom in a group show that will travel to both the Audain Gallery and the Ex Libris Gallery at each respective countries. Each of the participating artists will create an art work that can be digitally shipped, the file may be emailed and then printed as a photograph, or a video file which is simply projected. This exchange will highlight both shared perceptions and varied studies in digital and material thinking, while inviting larger academic communities into a more extensive reciprocity of research, place, and perceptions.
