Using art as an opportunity to explore the North East, Paul Jex would visit galleries and museums to understand an individuals place in the world, The Art Photograph Series, begun in 1998 involved using a cheap 35mm camera to capture art works from regional collections, which then expanded to National, European and American collections. When Paul stopped taking photographs, due to digital cameras and the then phasing out of 35mm films, Jex had amassed a total of 954 photographs.
Within this collection are 43 photographs taken in 2000 from the old Middlesbrough Art Gallery on Linthorpe Road including Eduardo Paolozzi’s Who’s afraid of Sugar Pink and Lime Green? 1971.
Jex would take one photograph per art work; not knowing what the image would turn out like until it was developed was part of the excitement of 35mm cameras yet also kept costs low. The resulting photograph was terrible; its dark and blurry with a terrible flash disrupting the image. Yet it’s not necessarily the photograph that is important – it’s the artist, the art work, the personal journeys undertaken, the change in technology and the recording of regional and international collections which by putting them into Jex's own collection meant that an art work from a regional collection has as much validity to that of a major international art collection.
Each photograph has its own code that is logged and catalogued on a spreadsheet. For Middlesbrough Art Weekender, Jex had transferred this data into a document with each page referring to an art work in the photograph. This document was presented in two binders along with the photograph Paolozzi’s print. These cataolgues as an object allowed the audience to pick up and browse through as Jex strongly believes in the conversations of art are as important as art.
